Clayton St. Chippy is one of two city centre businesses who are set to be fined for employing iillegal immigrants. Immigration officers recently raided the chippy, where they discovered an Afghani and a South African around the plaice (hoho).
Could be why that sausage I bought a couple of weeks ago was half-cooked - I never though of ordering in Afghanistani.

The man tasked with finding work for the thousands of Northern Rock staff facing the axe has said the North East is remarkably well placed to handle the redundancies, reports The Journal
Alan Clarke, chief executive at development agency One NorthEast, claims there are more than 1000 financial sector jobs available in the North East right now - out of over 21,000 current vacancies in total in the region.
Mr Clark also promised Rock staff that his rapid response unit can find them all jobs - a promise backed by claims that there are plenty of financial companies looking to expand in the region and yet more that regional chiefs are trying to attract.
So, the outlook for former NR people may not be so cloudy after all.

Young farmers across Yorkshire and the North-East are being given the chance to win a trip to London and the seat of government as part of a special competition launched by the North-East NFU this month.
The competition has been designed to encourage young farmers to find out more about the NFU and its work - and hopefully encourage more young people to join the NFU. To enter, members of the Young Farmers Club need to answer 10 farming-related questions and then, in no more than 250 words, discuss two issues facing farming businesses in Yorkshire and the North-East.
For the over 18s, prizes include a chance to win a trip to the NFU’s London Office followed by a fascinating tour around the House of Commons with the head of parliamentary affairs, Barney Holbeche. Under 18s can win tickets to either the Great Yorkshire Show or Northumberland County Show.
The closing date is April 27 and entry forms can be downloaded from the NFU website.

bdaily reports that becoming a foster carer is quickly becoming a serious career option for many couples and single people.
Fostering is about caring for a child in your own home. Right now, there are nearly 40,000 children in England who have been placed with foster carers by social services for a number of reasons. Many of these eventually return to their families, however this can take a matter of days or weeks, or it could take years.
You don’t need formal qualifications to be a foster carer, but it helps if you have experience of caring for children together with plenty of commitment.
Helen Middleton of Team Fostering told bdaily:
“What we are really looking for is people who value and respect other people’s differences, people who are resourceful, flexible and able to use their initiative and enjoy teamwork.”
Prospective carers can be married, single or living together and there is no upper age limit for fostering. Foster carers are self employed and receive £381.50 a week for a standard placement and £497 a week for crisis intervention placements for teenagers.
Anyone joining Team Fostering will receive full training and support, plus the opportunity to achieve NVQ level 3 in Caring for Children and Young People.
For more information, you need to call Team Fostering’s Newcastle office on 0191 262 8855 or the Darlington office on 01325 368600

Check out this brief overview of working life in the city and surrounding region from Hobsons. It rightly states that “Newcastle is keen to be internationally recognised as a ‘European e-city’ with a world-class business park holding digital cluster SMEs, including a significant proportion of high growth graduate and R&D spin-out companies from the universities.”
But, more importantly, it looks like Newcastle’s new Great Park Development - which is earmarked for a cluster of high tech industry, offices, research and development - is set to bring 16,000 jobs to the city.
